We have been running a Saturday morning drama club at Courtney Primary School since Sept 2005. The drama club is open to members of 3 partner schools in South Glos.

The year is divided into two halves, so as to increase participation across the schools.
Drama club runs for years 3&4 from Sept-Feb, and for years 5&6 from Feb-July. There are 2 performances per year.

Over the term we teach the young people basic skills in: improvisation, physical theatre, mime, voice work, movement, devising and characterisation. We then begin to work on a devised performance using those skills. The young people are involved in choosing themes, creating characters, and devising the play. The play is then performed to friends and family.

The project is funded with a grant that the school has received to widen participation in extra curricular activities, such as drama, ceramics and sport.

BEYOND THE SCHOOL DAY

Over £4.8 million announced today from the Big Lottery Fund will boost dawn to dusk out-of-hours school activities that benefit pupils, their families and the wider community. The announcement is made under the Young People's Fund Extended Schools programme.

The Lottery Funded Extended Schools programme focuses on consultation with pupils and supports activities that take place out of school hours, reflecting the needs and wants of young people and helping schools build links with their local community.

Courtney Primary School based in Bristol is among five schools to benefit from a £46,000 grant allocation to Gloucestershire LEA. Two schemes have been devised after an extensive consultation with both pupils and parents: the first is targeted at nursery children and the second scheme is aimed at pupils aged 5 to 16 years old, promoting dramatic and artistic talents.

Keith Ledbury, Headteacher at Courtney Primary School, said: "The funding will enable us to utilise the facilities we have at school more widely. It will be great to have a local community theatre group and local artists coming into school to build self-confidence and develop the pupils artistic skills."
